How to Wash Silk: A Complete Guide to Caring for Silk Items

Silk is a luxurious, breathable and durable material, but it requires gentle care to maintain its beautiful shine and softness. If you wash silk incorrectly, it can lose its silkiness, fade or even tear. Here is a complete guide to washing and caring for silk items. We have also listed suitable washing gels that are available in Estonian markets/stores and are also suitable for washing silk fabric.

1. Should I wash it by hand or in a machine?

Silk is best washed by hand , but can also be machine washed if done with the correct settings.

2. Hand washing instructions

  • Use lukewarm water (maximum 30°C).
  • Add a gentle silk detergent or a detergent designed for wool and silk. You can find a list of suitable products at the end of the post.
  • Avoid rubbing hard – massage the fabric gently.
  • Do not soak for longer than 5 minutes , as the silk fibers may lose their strength.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water until the detergent is completely removed.

3. Machine wash instructions

  • Use a delicate wash cycle and lukewarm water (maximum 30°C).
  • Place the silk item in a laundry bag to prevent damage.
  • Use a gentle detergent , avoid bleach and enzyme-based detergents.
  • Choose a low spin speed or avoid it altogether. Maximum 600 rpm

4. Drying

  • Do not twist silk , as this can stretch and damage the fibers.
  • Place the item on a clean towel , roll up the towel, and press gently to remove excess moisture.
  • Dry on a flat surface or drying rack in the shade , away from direct sunlight and heat.
  • Do not tumble dry as this can shrink and damage the silk.

5. Ironing and wrinkle removal

  • Iron on low heat (silk setting) and inside out .
  • Use a steam iron or steamer to gently remove wrinkles.
  • When ironing, use a damp towel between the fabric and the iron to prevent shiny marks.
  • 6. Stain removal

Avoid strong stain removers and chlorine-based products.

To remove a light stain, dab it with a damp cloth and a small amount of silk detergent.

For grease stains, sprinkle cornstarch or baby powder on the stain , let it work, and gently brush it off.

7. Silk storage

Fold the silk neatly and store it in a breathable cloth bag (not plastic).

Avoid exposure to sunlight as it may fade the fabric.

Summary

Silk is a delicate material that requires special care, but with proper washing and care, it can retain its beauty and durability for a long time. By using gentle washing methods, avoiding high heat, and storing silk in the right conditions, you can enjoy its luxuriousness for a long time.
